A negative GG is a sportsmanship callout weaponized into an insult — most famously 'gg ez,' but also any GG delivered with obvious contempt, sarcasm, or condescension. It wears the costume of good sport behavior while doing the exact opposite. Negative GGs are a staple of toxic gaming culture: technically you typed 'good game,' but everyone in the lobby knows what you actually meant. Some games have added automated warnings or filters specifically because of negative GGs, which tells you everything about how commonly they're deployed.

A GG check is the moment after a match, argument, or competition ends when everyone silently or openly assesses whether the outcome actually deserves a good game callout — or if someone needs to sit with a bad loss in silence. Throwing out a GG when the other side played dirty, ran cheap tactics, or stomped you so badly sportsmanship feels impossible is exactly what a GG check is trying to prevent. It's a brief moment of internal (or public) audit: did this actually deserve mutual respect? Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes it very much is not.

GG mode is when you've fully accepted the outcome of a match or situation and entered a state of calm, graceful closure — no more tilting, no more arguing, just quiet acknowledgment that it's over and you're ready to move on. Going GG mode means you've stopped fighting the result and chosen dignity over a meltdown. It's the mental state associated with being a good sport: composed, unbothered, ready for the next game. Notably, some people fake GG mode while seething on the inside, which the community can usually detect immediately.
