A mate fail is a moment where you completely dropped the ball as a friend — forgot the birthday, said the wrong thing at the wrong time, bailed on plans, or missed an obvious signal that someone needed you. It's the social equivalent of an unforced error, the kind that makes you cringe privately for days after.
