"Define The Relationship." The conversation where you clarify whether you're exclusive, official, or just seeing where it goes. Universally dreaded; universally inevitable. Usually needed 2–4 months in and usually weeks late.

A Define The Relationship conversation that technically happens but resolves nothing — vague answers, non-committal energy, half-statements that trail off. A mid DTR leaves both people with a loose label that neither is fully satisfied with, like agreeing you're 'a thing' without defining what that thing actually means. It's better than no DTR but not by much. The main output is a shared narrative you'll each interpret completely differently until the next awkward conversation forces a clearer answer.

When the Define The Relationship talk goes completely sideways — one person expected commitment, the other wanted to keep things casual, and now both are staring at their phones in separate Ubers. A DTR fail can mean miscommunication, bad timing, or simply revealing that two people were never on the same page. It's the conversational equivalent of opening a box and finding something completely different from what you ordered. The aftermath usually involves at least one sad playlist and a very long voice note to a best friend.
