A patch that weakens an overpowered character, weapon, or ability to restore balance. "Nerfed" = made worse. Players complain loudly about every nerf to their main, even when objectively needed. From the Nerf toy-brand — weakening something makes it soft like Nerf foam.

Someone with an almost supernatural gift for identifying and exploiting overpowered mechanics right before the devs inevitably nerf them — or conversely, a developer who has a legendary track record for destroying beloved characters with heavy-handed balance changes. A nerf god in the first sense is respected and feared; in the second, they're a meme and a villain. Either way, the title is given with a kind of awe, even when it's not a compliment.

An L nerf is exactly what it sounds like: a bad patch decision that makes the game (or situation) worse, either by hitting the wrong thing, going too far, or being so poorly executed that it creates new problems. The developers took an L, the community takes an L, the whole thing is an L. L nerf is used to vent collective outrage with maximum efficiency — two syllables that communicate disappointment, frustration, and a sense of betrayal by whoever was supposed to be in charge of balance. Outside gaming it describes any poorly executed cutback that damages more than it fixes.
