schmear mode

A state of operating at a notably low or chaotic level — making bad decisions, producing poor work, or behaving insufferably. Entering shitter mode is usually involuntary, triggered by stress, fatigue, or just a terrible stretch of form, and recognized by everyone around you.

The mental state of operating in full triage, heads-down, everything-is-on-fire productivity — borrowed from agile methodology but applied to any situation where normal functioning is suspended in favor of rapid, collaborative problem-solving. When someone is in scrum mode, pleasantries are suspended, tasks are spoken in bullet points, and any question not relevant to the immediate crisis gets a hard redirect. It's a compliment and a warning simultaneously: this person will get the thing done, and you will not be getting small talk from them right now.

Grimy mode is when someone fully activates their most dishonest, self-serving tendencies and stops pretending to care about anyone else's interests. They're not slipping up — they've made a deliberate choice to be sketchy and they're committing to it. Grimy mode can be switched on by desperation, opportunity, or just a change in priorities. Everyone has a friend who goes grimy mode when money or romance is involved. The best strategy is to recognize it early and act accordingly.

The state of fully embracing being a scrub — zero motivation, minimum effort, maximum comfort, and zero apologies about any of it. Scrub mode is when you have decided that productivity is a scam, the dishes can wait, and the sweatpants stay on indefinitely. It is not depression; it is a deliberate choice to operate at the lowest acceptable tier of human function while remaining basically fine. Some people enter scrub mode for a weekend and bounce back. Others have been in scrub mode since a breakup in 2019 and are starting to think it might be a permanent lifestyle. Either way, you are fed and horizontal.

The state of playing so far below your actual skill level — intentionally or on a smurf account — that winning feels automatic. In smurf mode, every decision comes easy, every aim check is casual, every game is one-sided. Players joke about 'entering smurf mode' when they feel unusually dominant in a lobby. It can also describe someone consciously dumbing down their gameplay to carry a lower-rank friend without making it obvious.
