Steaning (also spelled 'steening') is a construction and civil engineering term for the stone, brick, or masonry lining of a well, pit, or similar excavation — the material or act of lining a shaft to prevent collapse and contamination. In an older dialectal sense it could also refer to a ford across a river, paved with stones. The construction sense is more widely documented and useful. A steaned well is a properly lined well with structural integrity; the steaning is what keeps it from caving in.
