Definitions
A quick gut-check on whether someone has the mental or emotional capacity to handle something right now. A bandwidth check is what you do before unloading a heavy conversation — a small act of consideration that says 'I see you as a whole person with limits, not just a listener.' In workplace slang it's also used literally to ask if someone can take on more work. Either way, it's the opposite of just dumping your problems or tasks on someone without a moment's notice.
Before I tell you about my entire week, doing a bandwidth check — are you okay to talk?

- bandwidth79%
Corporate-speak for time or mental capacity. "I don't have bandwidth" = "I'm not doing that." Beautifully vague — nobody has to admit overwork, bad prioritization, or that your request is the last thing they want to touch. Widely mocked precisely because it works.
- bandwidth energy74%
Bandwidth energy is the vibe someone gives off when they're clearly stretched too thin — the slightly glazed eyes, the short replies, the way they say 'yeah totally' while obviously not processing what you just said. It's the ambient signal that this person is running at 99% capacity and any additional load might crash the system. You don't take it personally when someone has bandwidth energy; you just read the room and don't add to their stack.
- capacity check73%
A moment of honest self-assessment — often prompted by stress, burnout, or being asked to take on yet another commitment — where you pause and genuinely evaluate how much more you can handle. Capacity check is the mental equivalent of looking at your gas gauge before a long drive. Gen Z and millennial wellness-adjacent social media culture has turned this into a legitimate phrase for checking in with yourself before saying yes or committing to anything that costs emotional or mental energy.
- bandwidth coded73%
Bandwidth-coded describes a person, environment, or situation that constantly demands more than its fair share of your attention and mental energy. That one friend who always needs something, the job that follows you home, the group chat that never sleeps — all bandwidth-coded. It's not necessarily malicious, but it IS exhausting. Being bandwidth-coded means you're a cognitive drain whether you mean to be or not, and people start managing their exposure to you accordingly.
- mega bandwidth73%
Someone with mega bandwidth is operating at an almost superhuman level of mental and emotional capacity — they're managing three projects, maintaining their social life, going to the gym, and somehow still have space to help you process your situationship drama. It's both inspiring and slightly suspicious. Mega bandwidth energy is the person who always has time, always has answers, and never seems frazzled. Either they have incredible systems, incredible privilege, or they're hiding their breaking points very well.
