Benching mode is the deliberate state of keeping all your romantic prospects at a comfortable arm's length — not ending things, not advancing them, just maintaining low-effort contact with everyone while committing to nobody. When someone goes into benching mode, they become responsive enough to keep interest alive but vague enough to avoid accountability.
