The mental and behavioral headspace you enter when you've decided the relationship ambiguity needs to end — you're done accepting vague signals, mixed messages, or undefined labels, and you're preparing to have the conversation. DTR mode means you're watching their actions more carefully, rehearsing the talk in your head, and deliberately steering interactions toward clarity. It can be nerve-racking, empowering, or both. When someone says they're in DTR mode, they're signaling that the next interaction with their situationship is going to count for something.

"Define The Relationship." The conversation where you clarify whether you're exclusive, official, or just seeing where it goes. Universally dreaded; universally inevitable. Usually needed 2–4 months in and usually weeks late.

Fully converted to the belief that every romantic situationship deserves clarity and that ambiguity is not a vibe — it's just avoidance with better lighting. Someone who's DTR pilled has been through enough undefined relationships to conclude that the talk, however awkward, is always better than the limbo. They'll encourage their friends to have it, they'll have it themselves without prompting, and they have zero patience for anyone who thinks 'keeping it casual' is a sustainable long-term strategy. Usually the result of one too many months wasted on someone who was never going to commit.

A person, behavior, or situation that screams 'we need to define this relationship' without anyone saying it out loud. When something is DTR coded, the subtext is unmistakable — meeting the parents, keeping a toothbrush at their place, being their plus-one at weddings — all the signals that both people are pretending aren't signals. When the Define The Relationship talk goes completely sideways — one person expected commitment, the other wanted to keep things casual, and now both are staring at their phones in separate Ubers.
