Definitions
When the Define The Relationship talk goes completely sideways — one person expected commitment, the other wanted to keep things casual, and now both are staring at their phones in separate Ubers. A DTR fail can mean miscommunication, bad timing, or simply revealing that two people were never on the same page. It's the conversational equivalent of opening a box and finding something completely different from what you ordered. The aftermath usually involves at least one sad playlist and a very long voice note to a best friend.
Total dtr fail — I said exclusive, he said 'let's keep vibing.'

- DTR82%
"Define The Relationship." The conversation where you clarify whether you're exclusive, official, or just seeing where it goes. Universally dreaded; universally inevitable. Usually needed 2–4 months in and usually weeks late.
- mid dtr82%
A Define The Relationship conversation that technically happens but resolves nothing — vague answers, non-committal energy, half-statements that trail off. A mid DTR leaves both people with a loose label that neither is fully satisfied with, like agreeing you're 'a thing' without defining what that thing actually means. It's better than no DTR but not by much. The main output is a shared narrative you'll each interpret completely differently until the next awkward conversation forces a clearer answer.
- dtr core80%
A relationship aesthetic defined entirely by the DTR conversation — couples who lead with the talk, set explicit labels from day one, and communicate expectations out loud rather than letting things drift into ambiguity. DTR core people have no patience for situationships or soft launches; if you're seeing each other, it has a name. The vibe is intentional, direct, and unapologetically adult. You either DTR or you're not really in DTR core. Often used to describe someone whose whole personality is label clarity.
- dtr mode79%
The mental and behavioral headspace you enter when you've decided the relationship ambiguity needs to end — you're done accepting vague signals, mixed messages, or undefined labels, and you're preparing to have the conversation. DTR mode means you're watching their actions more carefully, rehearsing the talk in your head, and deliberately steering interactions toward clarity. It can be nerve-racking, empowering, or both. When someone says they're in DTR mode, they're signaling that the next interaction with their situationship is going to count for something.
- dtr coded79%
A person, behavior, or situation that screams 'we need to define this relationship' without anyone saying it out loud. When something is DTR coded, the subtext is unmistakable — meeting the parents, keeping a toothbrush at their place, being their plus-one at weddings — all the signals that both people are pretending aren't signals. DTR coded moments are the universe's way of telling you that the vague era is over, and the only thing left is having the actual conversation everyone in the situationship has been strategically avoiding.
