It can also describe a culturally notable moment of orbiting — a breakup story so recognizable that it defines what the behavior looks like at its most concentrated.

A subtle, low-intensity form of orbiting where the surveillance is present but careful — viewing stories occasionally rather than instantly, liking posts sporadically rather than compulsively, maintaining just enough digital presence to stay on someone's radar without triggering obvious recognition. Low key orbiting is the version with plausible deniability intact: you can always claim you just happened to see their post rather than admitting you've had their profile on rotation. It's orbiting with a discipline that makes it more sustainable and, arguably, more insidious.

At this level, it blurs the line between passive digital presence and something mental health professionals might want to discuss.

When an orbiting strategy collapses publicly or humiliatingly — usually because the person being orbited calls it out, the algorithm exposes the surveillance, or the orbiter accidentally reveals themselves in some way. Classic orbiting fails include accidentally liking a post from two years ago while deep in a profile excavation, viewing a story instantly and getting screenshotted, or being called out in a TikTok specifically about obvious orbiters. The fail reveals what was supposed to be invisible passive watching as obviously deliberate behavior.

A self-audit or reality check to determine whether someone is orbiting you — passively watching your social media without making real contact — or whether you're doing the orbiting. An orbiting check involves scrolling through your story views, noting who always watches but never texts, and reckoning with what that means.
