orbiting fail

A subtle, low-intensity form of orbiting where the surveillance is present but careful — viewing stories occasionally rather than instantly, liking posts sporadically rather than compulsively, maintaining just enough digital presence to stay on someone's radar without triggering obvious recognition. Low key orbiting is the version with plausible deniability intact: you can always claim you just happened to see their post rather than admitting you've had their profile on rotation. It's orbiting with a discipline that makes it more sustainable and, arguably, more insidious.

Taking orbiting to its absolute extreme — a hyper-optimized, almost algorithmic level of passive digital surveillance where you watch every story the instant it posts, like strategic older content, show up across every platform, and maintain maximum visibility without ever making direct contact. Orbiting maxxing is orbiting treated as a skill to be perfected rather than a chaotic accident of longing. The irony is that all this effort to be noticed without reaching out is more work than just sending a text would be.

The apex of orbiting behavior — the point of maximum passive surveillance intensity where every story is viewed immediately, every post is liked within seconds, and the person being orbited has started showing their friends the analytics as evidence. Peak orbiting is often the phase just before someone either finally texts or finally gives up for real. It can also describe a culturally notable moment of orbiting — a breakup story so recognizable that it defines what the behavior looks like at its most concentrated.

The state of deliberately or unconsciously drifting into orbiting behavior — watching an ex's or crush's social media without making real contact. Orbiting mode is often something people slip into without consciously choosing it: you told yourself you were over it, but here you are, watching every story, liking posts from three weeks ago at 2am. The 'mode' framing acknowledges it as a behavioral state you can enter and theoretically exit, which makes it feel less pathetic and more like a temporary glitch to be debugged.

A self-audit or reality check to determine whether someone is orbiting you — passively watching your social media without making real contact — or whether you're doing the orbiting. An orbiting check involves scrolling through your story views, noting who always watches but never texts, and reckoning with what that means. It can also be a group activity: a friend asking another 'orbiting check — is he still watching your stories?' in a distinctly investigative, slightly obsessive way. The check frames digital surveillance as a formal diagnostic procedure.
