Specifically negative usage: an unhealthy fixation on a creator who doesn't know you exist. "Parasocial breakdown" = visible emotional reaction to a creator's personal life.

Parasocial mode is what someone slips into when they start engaging with a creator's content so heavily that the boundary between fan and friend starts blurring in their own head. Replying to every post like they'll be seen, getting emotionally affected by the creator's mood, feeling genuine excitement when acknowledged — even by an automated response. Parasocial mode isn't always a crisis; sometimes it's just a phase. But when it starts bleeding into real emotional investment in someone who doesn't know you exist, that's when the check becomes necessary.

A one-sided "relationship" between a fan and a public figure they've never met. The streamer knows their audience's names en masse, not individually; the audience feels like they know the streamer personally.

Peak parasocial is sometimes said admiringly within fandoms, sometimes used as a gentle intervention, and sometimes deployed as a brutal burn.
